In recent years, international art fairs have entered the market, and European galleries have attracted a hot gaze, and Korean contemporary art is showing even more excitement. On July 19th, an exhibition "Twisted" by five artists curated by Gallery STAN, a contemporary art gallery in New York and Seoul, opened at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO. The theme behind this exhibition was "to disseminate Asian culture to the world and create a new movement from Tokyo and Seoul," and it was held as the second part of a cultural exchange project between PARCO and Gallery STAN, which has been deepening friendship since 2023. ※PARCO participated in the art festival “MESS” organized by Gallery STAN held in Seoul in February this year.

On the first night of the first night, an opening party was held at two locations in Shibuya PARCO to commemorate the exhibition "Twisted". Super DOMMUNE hosted a two-hour talk session and live DJ event focusing on Korean art and music by Korean web media "VISLA Magazine" and "Gallery STAN". In ComMunE, DJ and music performances by Korean and Japanese artists were held, and the floor was excited by the fusion of Japanese and Korean culture. We will report the highlights of this exhibition and the enthusiasm at SUPER DOMMUNE and ComMunE together with snap photos.

Gallery STAN Curation Group Exhibition “Twisted” Opening Party @ PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO

An exhibition of up-and-coming Korean artists who have a "Twisted" charm that makes you feel twisted in an outstanding expression. Participating artists are SAMBYPEN, who works on creative works that reinterpret brands and icons that are familiar to the public through various parodies, and N5BRA (Nobra) pursues pictorial expressions based on interest and desire for the human body. There are five members: MAWZ (Mauz), which draws symbolic motifs such as eagles and cars while incorporating elements of graffiti and surrealism, BAZBON (Buzz Bonn), which develops flat works based on the influence of street culture, hip hop, and subculture, and Kim Doongji (Kim Dungji), who explores oil painting in a modern era full of digital art and technology.
I asked each of them about their works and their impressions of visiting Japan.

SAMBYPEN

The wall immediately after entering the exhibition hall is SAMBYPEN's new collection, which is said to have been produced for this exhibition. SAMBYPEN commented on the concept and process of the new work, "By choosing motifs intuitively without thinking deeply and combining them on the screen while transforming them, unexpected meanings and directings are created for me." Please pay attention not only to the sensibility that creates irony and humor while using coincidence, but also to the unique expression method of how he outputs it. His method of expression is to draw pre-created digital data on a canvas, and then paste wood with a laser printer on top of it.…Ingenious: rather than painting, it is a "planar" three-dimensional art that goes back and forth between analog and digital. The collaboration with XLARGE and MCM is a new SAMBYPEN in memory, but in this exhibition, I was able to fully feel his artist character in the original 3D work.

"I've come to Japan a lot, but it's the first time I've come for such a big exhibition, and I'm very nervous. Today is a show and I’m not going out too much for today. Tomorrow evening, I have a reservation to put a TATTOO at my friend TAPPEI. The pattern is as strange as possible (laughs) I want to put it in the motif that he wants to do."

BAZBON

BAZBON presents a work that draws Japanese street fashion with light illustration touch. Both works have a black character with no surface or line designed as an alternative ego (a different personality), scattered anime motifs in various places, and a teameful and mysterious atmosphere.

"Japanese culture was the first time I started painting. I was influenced by Akira Toriyama's manga. So, this time, I dare to exhibit in drawing. Also, when I come to Japan, I always have high expectations for shopping. It's fun to see not only fashion items but also interiors. Japan has a lot of attention to detail, so it's always been studied."

MAWZ

MAWZ released a series of works that began with letters-like paintings, followed by works depicting the dramatic development of cars and cars with cars as lovers. Regarding the background of choosing a car as a motif, "As I watched the speed of races gathering on national roads, I began to find emotions in cars, not people, and stories in the relationship between cars and cars." Comments The method of exhibiting in a series of works to remind the story, rather than one-piece, is one of MAWZ's writers, and he says, "When you send a film, you can imagine the connection between the frames to some extent, even if the interval between the frames is separated." I would like to pursue such a cinematic painting expression."

"I think Japan has a very special power from a cultural point of view. I also think he is better at expressing it more than any other country. In particular, the Japanese manga I saw when I was a child had a great influence on me. Japanese comics and animations are one of the hobbies I still enjoy."

N5BRA

N5BRA, who depicts a woman's body based on interest and desire for existential existence, presents an exciting series of paintings depicting austerity, a genre of Japanese fetishism. He had a strong interest in unstable existentiality, such as being conscious in the body and being able to stand up by the presence of things, and said, "I continue to draw space on the screen. I can't help but paint to fill my anxiety about existentiality."

"I like Japan very much. The cultural power I have is amazing, and I think there is only a part to learn. Many Japanese writers should refer to when drawing. My favorite writer is history Yamaguchi. I'm close to you. It's like a parent (laughs). I participated in the same booth at ART FAIR TOKYO, and I think I've always learned from that kind of person."

KIM DOONGJI

Kim Dungi, born in 1992, the same as SAMBYPEN, has a contrasting oil painting. Based on the motifs of people, buildings, nature, animals, etc. living in the modern urban environment, the mental landscape is drawn with thick oil paintings. Kim said, “As cameras and computers were developed and the things that can only be expressed in paintings were significantly reduced, I had to look for the meaning of continuing to be a painter. I decided not to be outside of myself, but to express the inside."

"I've been in contact with Japanese culture and content since I was a child, so I'm familiar with it. I'm a person who draws pictures, so it's really fun to see detailed shapes and details. For example, when you go to an old city, the shape of the toilet basin in a public toilet is different for each city. It is interesting for me that the country of Japan allows a variety of things, and that such things are combined to form one harmony. It’s always fun to come to Japan.”

A variety of exhibitions where you can see the new works of five people who pursue completely different expressions while living in the same era, were interesting to approach the koto line of what you see in each form of five people.

Gallery STAN Curation Group Exhibition “Twisted” Opening Party @ ComMunE

"ComMunE" was held as an opening party for DJ and music performances by artists from South Korea and Japan. As a special guest from South Korea at the main act, the Voltage skyrocketed as a hot topic artist Colde in ALBUM, where BTS RM participated in the feature. DJ Skope and DJ duo WASP by Gen Yamada and SOTA also appeared, coloring the opening of the exhibition with a whirlpool of enthusiasm.
