In recent years, international art fairs have entered the market, and European galleries are paying a hot eye, and Korean contemporary art is showing even more excitement. On July 19th, the exhibition "Twisted" by five artists curated by Gallery STAN, a contemporary art gallery in New York and Seoul, which led the cutting edge, opened at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO. Behind this exhibition is the theme of "transmitting Asian culture to the world from Tokyo and Seoul to create a new movement", which was held as the second part of a cultural exchange project between PARCO and Gallery STAN, which have been deepening friendship since 2023. ※In the first installment, PARCO participated in the art festival “MESS” hosted by Gallery STAN, held in Seoul in February this year.

On the first night, in commemoration of the exhibition "Twisted", an opening party was held at two locations in Shibuya PARCO. In SUPER DOMMUNE, the Korean web media "VISLA Magazine" and "Gallery STAN" held over two hours talk sessions and LIVE and DJ events focusing on Korean art and music. At ComMunE, DJ and music performances by artists from Korea and Japan were held, and the floor was excited by the fusion of Japanese and Korean cultures. We will report the highlights of this exhibition and the enthusiasm at SUPER DOMMUNE ComMunE along with snap photos.

Gallery STAN Curation Group Exhibition "Twisted" Opening Party @ PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO

An exhibition of up-and-coming artists from Korea who have a "twisted" charm that makes you feel twisted in an outstanding expression. Participating artists are SAMBYPEN, who works on creative works that reinterpret brands and icons familiar to the public through various parodys, and N5BRA, who pursues pictorial expression based on interest and desires in the human body. MAWZ, which draws symbolic motifs such as eagles and cars vividly while incorporating elements of graffiti and surrealism, BAZBON, which develops flat works based on the influence of street culture, hip-hop, and subculture, Kim Doongji, who explores the expression of oil painting in a modern age full of digital art and technology.
I asked each of them about their work and their impressions of coming to Japan.

SAMBYPEN

The wall immediately after entering the exhibition hall is the new collection of SAMBYPEN, which is said to have been created for this exhibition. SAMBYPEN commented on the concept and process of the new work, "Selecting motifs intuitively without thinking deeply and combining them on the screen while deforming them, creating unexpected meanings and productions for me." Please pay attention not only to the sensibility that creates irony and humor while using accidental nature, but also to how he outputs it and his unique expression method. His method of expression is to draw pre-created digital data on a canvas, and then paste wood that has been precisely cut with a laser printer on it.…It's a "plane" three-dimensional art that goes back and forth between analog and digital rather than painting. The collaboration with XLARGE and MCM is a new SAMBYPEN, but in this exhibition, I was able to fully feel his artist character with his original 3D works.

"I've come to Japan a lot, but it's my first time to come for such a big exhibition, and I'm very nervous. It's a performance today, and I'm not going out very much for today. I have a reservation for TATTOO tomorrow evening at my friend TAPPEI. The pattern is as strange as possible (laughs) I want to put it in the motif that he wants to do."

BAZBON

BAZBON presents a work that draws Japanese street fashion with a light illustration touch. Each work has a black character with no surface or line designed as an alternative ego (another personality), scattered anime motifs in some places, and has a tearful and mysterious atmosphere.

"Japanese culture is the reason why I started drawing first. I was influenced by Akira Toriyama's manga. So, this time, I dared to exhibit with drawing. Also, when you always come to Japan, you have high expectations for shopping. It's fun to see not only fashion items but also interiors. Japan has a strong commitment to detail, so I always study it."

MAWZ

MAWZ presented a series of works that began with a painting in a letter, followed by a work depicting the dramatic development of cars and cars with a car as a lover. Regarding the background that chose the car as a motif, `` As I watched the speed of races gathering on national roads, I came to find emotions in cars, not people, and stories in the relationship between cars and cars. " One of MAWZ's writers is how to display them in series to remind the story, not just one piece, and he says, "If you send a movie, you can imagine a connection between frames and frames to some extent, even if the distance between frames is far apart. I would like to pursue such a cinematic expression of painting."

"I think Japan has very special power from a cultural point of view. I also think it's better at expressing it than any country. In particular, the Japanese manga I saw when I was a child had a great impact on me. Japanese manga and animation are one of my favorite hobbies."

N5BRA

N5BRA, which depicts a woman's body based on interest and desire for existence, presents an exciting series of paintings depicting austerity, a genre of Japanese fetisism. He has a strong interest in the instability of existence, such as being conscious in the body and creating a space by the existence of things, "I continue to draw space on the screen." "I can't help but draw it to fill my anxiety about existentiality," he said.

"I like Japan very much. The cultural power I have is amazing, and I think there is only a part to learn. There are many artists in Japan who should refer to when drawing. His favorite writer is Yamaguchi history. I'm close friends with Mr. It's like my boss (laughs). I participated in the same booth at ART FAIR TOKYO, but I think I'm always learning from those people."

KIM DOONGJI

Kim Dunji, born in 1992, the same as SAMBYPEN, is developing a contrasting oil painting. Using motifs of people, buildings, nature, animals, etc. living in modern urban environments, he draws an image with thick oil paintings. Kim says, "As cameras and computers have been developed and the number of things that can only be expressed in paintings has decreased dramatically, I had to look for the meaning of continuing to be a painter." "I decided to express the inside rather than being outside of myself," he said.

"I've been in contact with Japanese culture and content since I was a child, so I'm familiar with it. I'm a person who draws pictures, so it's really fun to see detailed modeling and details above all. For example, when you go to an old city, the shape of the wash basin of the public toilet differs from city to city. It is interesting for me that Japan is allowed to have a variety of things, and that such things are combined to form one harmony. It's always fun to come to Japan."

A variety of exhibitions where you can see the new works of five people who pursue completely different expressions while living in the same era, have the fun of approaching the koto line in each of the five people.
