Interview Haruka Shimazaki | Stage "New Hamlet ~ Dazai Osamu and Shakespeare!? ~」

"Hamlet" is Shakespeare's tragedy in which Danish Prince Hamlet seeks revenge on his uncle who robbed his father of kingdom and mother. Dazai Osamu's novel, which borrows only the rough setting of this play and elaborately written the psychology of the characters with humor and irony, is the 50th anniversary series of PARCO THEATER's opening series, "Shin Hamlet-Dazai Osamu, and Shakespeare!" It is performed as ". The cast is Kimura Achievement, Haruka Shimazaki, Ryo Kato, Kensuke Komai, Narushi Ikeda, Yuki Matsushita, Mitsuru Hirata, and others who are full of individuality and ability. The production script and production will be handled by Marie Gonohe, who won the last year's Yomiuri Theater Awards Best Director Award. By the way, Haruka Shimazaki, who first appears in PARCO THEATER in the role of Hamlet's lover Off Ilya, is in the heart of Haruka Shimazaki…?

――My uncle, who became the new king, was a very low waist man, and Hamlet was a crybaby…。 This work is quite different from Shakespeare's "Hamlet", but what did you think after reading the script?

At first, it was like, "How do you read this letter?" My role is also written as "Off Ilya" and there are many difficult kanji characters. The wording is different from the conversation we usually talk about, so "Can you remember this?" But I thought the content was funny. In the first place, Dazai Osamu wrote first, "I never wrote it as a play," but it's interesting because I made it into a play (laughs).

――I heard that the lesson started in April. What is your impression of the director Marie Gonohe and his training?

Mr. Gonohe's impression is gentle, like a library teacher. For every role, I think deeply about emotions, and when I ask questions, I will answer politely. "Isn't this kind of feeling?" "I think this line is talking with this kind of feeling", so everyone is making one theater I feel like It's fun to realize that I didn't even think of it myself.

――Who is the most concerned about the cast now?

What I often talk about is Ryo-kun, who will be the sixth co-star this time (Kato), but I am worried about everyone. Guys, it's fun. Even if I play the role in the training, there is a lot of "that personality" of each person. The expression of each actor when he doesn't speaks is also very good. I feel that I have not yet expressed such "likeness" at all, so I want to be able to put it out. It may be more beautiful to do the image of the character written on the script as it is, but I still want to put out my kolor too. If you add the charm of the actor to the role, I think it will be a role that only that person can do.

――I'm looking forward to seeing Mr. Shimazaki's unique off-Ilya. By the way, have you seen Shakespeare's "Hamlet" on stage or movie?

I didn't. However, recently, I happened to see a video of the stage where Tatsuya Fujiwara is doing Hamlet. I thought it would be better not to watch it because it was not good if it was influenced by it, but I watched it a little (laughs). After all, I decided to stop it, so I stopped immediately, but (Suzuki) I was also worried about Ophelia, and a little (laughs).

――This is the first performance in PARCO THEATER. What is your impression of the theater?

The carpet and chairs are red and cool. After watching the stage, my feelings became easier. He called me to a historic theater older than me for the anniversary year and said, "Thank you. But it's okay. I felt like I could do it myself, but in this space, I feel that I can play with peace of mind. When the stage was too wide, the distance from the co-starred person was far away, and I thought it was a little subtle.

――On a much larger stage, a huge number of customers were in front of me, so I don't seem to be nervous.

When the song is live…Certainly, I wasn’t very nervous. It's live that I don't know what will happen, but there are many seniors and I thought it would help in case of emergency. I slept until about 5 minutes before the show started, and Akimoto (Yasu) was surprised (laughs). However, I feel nervous before the next stage production. When it comes to a dome, customers can only see the size of rice grains, but with the sense of distance from this theater, the expression of the customer seems to be clearly visible.

――What kind of impression do you have on the role of Off Ilya at this stage?

I was wondering if I had a weak feeling, but now I think it's okay not to do that. When I was reading the script alone, I was reading it with darkness or calmness. But as I practiced, I remembered that Off Ilya was originally a good night. I'm still looking for it, but don't forget that, and make sure that dark lines don't get too dark. The movement of emotions may be the biggest of the characters. It was really interesting to tell the Queen (Hamlet's mother) that she loved the Queen, and what did Dazai think during this period? I think.

――What is your impression of Hamlet in this work?

That's hard. I'm still thinking, 'Off Ilya thinks of Hamlet?' For me, I don't want to be very friends with someone like Hamlet. In other words, I don't think there's a lot in reality.

――There are many people who are worried about this work. Is Mr. Shimazaki a problematic type? Or is it optimistic?

I'm very worried. I'm worried about the small things, and after returning home every day, it feels like a reflection meeting alone. "I shouldn't have told you that way," or "I should have done this more."

――How do you get rid of this situation?

I have a dog at home, so I have been saved a lot. And then I'm writing a diary. I write a "three year diary" in handwriting. When I write, I can organize my head and make it quite clear.

――One page is divided into three, and it is a diary that allows you to write records of the same day for three years on the same page.

Yes. It's just the second year, and one year ago today, what I think about Takagawa is interesting. I don't always write every day, so if nothing is written, I wonder if I was busy last year today. "I didn't like this. It's funny because it says something like that, I'm laughing a year ago (laughs). At that time, I think, "I'm glad I was laughing now." It's fun because it's my diary I wrote myself, but sometimes I think "It's interesting, this person."

――It's nice. What is Mr. Shimazaki looking forward to the most now, including the rest of the training and production?

I’m worried about the customer’s reaction. Maybe people who don't know Hamlet will come to see it, and on the other hand, there may be some who say they're a crazy fan of Hamlet.…I think each feeling is different. I'd be happy if you get hooked with Dazai fans.

――Mr. Shimazaki: Have you ever read any of Dazai’s works?

I’ve read “No Longer Human.” I was recommended to Grandpa. I'm already dead, but my grandfather loved books very much and gave me books since I was a child. I remember well that when I couldn't read the characters yet, I gave me a proper book, "The Prince of the Stars" instead of a picture book. Thanks to my grandpa, I loved books when I was little, and I read all the books.

――You're a lovely grandfather.

It was a book nerd who had the first edition of a famous writer such as Dazai Osamu and Ryunosuke Akutagawa. I'm also a traveler, and there are very thick books from each country that are written about the country, lined up in the room. It was my grandfather who took me to the museum, and all the artistic things were taught by my grandfather.

――I really wanted you to see this stage. Would you be pleased?

That's right. Suddenly, I was motivated now. Of course, I wasn't motivated until now (laughs), but when I thought it was true, I was happy to say, "I can't see it anymore, but let's do my best." If Grandpa was alive, I could have talked a lot, and now I think it's even more.

――Finally, please give a message to the reader.

When I hear Shakespeare or Hamlet, people who don't usually watch the stage feel a little high threshold, but "New Hamlet" is OK. Words are fun, and conversations are fun too. The costumes are also unique, and the set is fashionable. If I was imagining that it would be a set like a castle, it would look cool. It's strange to want you to laugh at "Hamlet" and go home, but I'm happy if that happens. I hope you will enjoy it. Please come and see me!
