Interview Marine Serre| To dress is to live. Philosophy of Marlene Cell

Marlene Cell was born and raised in a small village in central France. Meet the charm of fashion in a world of creation that has become familiar with sports in the rich nature since childhood and became absorbed in the teenager. After establishing his own brand, MARINE SERRE in 2016, he won the LVMH Prize the following year, attracting attention. Based on the concept of "eco-futurist" consistently since its debut, there is no doubt in its attitude to explore sustainable materials and practice manufacturing methods. This is my third visit to Japan for Shibuya PARCO, the first store in Japan for MARINE SERRE. He talked about the origins of Marlene Cell's creation with a view to the future, and his mission as a fashion designer in the future.

—— First of all, I would like to ask you how you became interested in fashion. Because he was obsessed with tennis from 3 to 16 years old. I'm curious about how you went on the fashion road from there.

I was born and raised in a place rich in nature surrounded by mountains, and I enjoyed various sports in addition to tennis every day. But when I started going to art school at the age of 14, I started to become interested in my own clothes little by little. That's why my first experience with fashion began with exploring my personality and personality as a woman. Gradually, I was looking forward to expressing my mood in accordance with various situations, such as when I went to a movie or going to a flea market or shop. Looking back, when I was 15, I might have looked like I was 25. I think I was asking people for an experience saying, "Your mood is wonderful, as if you have uniqueness from others."

—— You started wearing it as a self-expression, right?

I think it was self-expression and armed to protect myself. In a sense, I think that the two are both side and side. Isn't the desire to see people like this an act of protecting themselves at the same time? You may not be able to directly and truly protect your life through fashion, but I don't think you'll go out with a straight line, so it's necessary to dress up. To dress is also to reconsider and take care of yourself. So I still like to dress up, and I like to make clothes for my sister and friends. As a fashion designer, if I say that I can do my best, empower women all over the world. I'm looking forward to thinking about design so that women can stay strong. Rather, it is no exaggeration to say that this work is continuing because we can do so.

—— What kind of women are you drawing?

For example, a woman who appears in the movie "Ghost in the Shell" or "The Matrix". Of course, Coco Chanel is one of the women I admire. I'm inspired by women who are always strong regardless of country or age. In order to shape it as a design, I always try to carefully observe and think about "what is a woman?" For a long time we have been socially oppressed, and we first feel that we need to fully understand ourselves.

—— How was your mother as a woman close to you?

My mother was never born and raised in a wealthy family, but she was always elegant. I knew my own atmosphere and taste. I like her style of wearing colorful clothes such as pistachio green and pink. She was a woman who carefully finished her hairstyle and makeup every day, and always showed a beautiful and elegant appearance. But interestingly, she's from the suburbs like me, so she's never been influenced by fashion from the city or the outside world. That's why it wasn't made, and it may have been felt as a consistent natural body from within.

—— Growing up in a hometown rich in nature has a lot of influence on you and your family. Since the establishment of the brand, we have been committed to consistent sustainability awareness and action. As far as I hear from you, it seems that you are familiar with your background.

Yes. Nature is so indispensable that it can no longer be said to be one of us. Sometimes society seems to forget its importance, but in reality, we can't live without trees and water. I can't work and I can't get happiness. I think that our happiness begins by loving nature and animals. Today, when there is a wind, I feel somewhat happy every time the trees shake. Do you feel that each time you feel nature is an equal relationship with nature, but every day you feel that you are much bigger than yourself? Thinking about sustainability is an obligation we take on a daily basis, but I think creating something in the first place also includes caring for people.

—— It seems that Paris was also getting hot enough to become news this summer. In Tokyo, the temperature is rising every year, and in the near future people feel that there will be a future where they can no longer be outside in summer. As Marlene mentioned earlier, I feel that it is necessary to work together to take action, not just one person, but together.

That's right. You may already be moving late. The climate around the world is changing day by day, the four seasons are gone, and now we feel that we can't control it. If you are in a city, you have fewer opportunities to come into contact with nature. I often travel to the suburbs where nature is located, or go to the mountains, but when I invite friends, I am afraid of walking in the forest. First of all, I think it is important to connect people, nature, and the whole world. Otherwise, I feel that people will live forever without worrying not only about nature but also about the food they put in their mouths. I feel it is important not only to look at instant information on the screen, but also to understand what they have done and to think about how they want to live. I think what I can do as a fashion designer is to reconnect everything through creation.

—— Sometimes I feel uneasy in the world where I lose even the opportunity to think.

Then people look at the screen with anxiety, feeling lonely, and nothing is resolved there. Rather than feeling anxious and turning away from fear, it is also important to face the reality of how much we have done and how the world has changed. That's why it's important to get real energy while touching nature and talking to friends and people you meet for the first time. I think that you will be able to think about what you felt uneasy by yourself with a little objective view.

—— How do you take care of yourself every day in a world where information is rapidly coming and going?

This morning, for example, I got up at 6:30 and after swimming, I did yoga and sauna to prepare myself. Today, especially after this interview, I knew that it was a long day that I had no time to rest and had dinner until night, so I decided to spend two hours carefully preparing my mind and body. The body is often referred to as capital, but if you are a little lack of sleep or tired, your head is not clear. Ideas and actions all come out of themselves. When I work in Paris, I take a walk of my dog from the morning, do meditation, try not to touch my cell phone until late every day, so that I value sleep and rest. After all, I have a habit of playing sports in nature surrounded by nature since I was a child, so I may be able to concentrate on putting my mobile phone and moving my body.

—— Mr. Marlene is impressed with his dignified appearance while listening to his stories so far and seeing past interviews.

I think my body is in charge of a sanctuary like a temple. I try to be objective in everything, rather than in front of me. Now that I knew that I needed energy to talk to you, I've been preparing it from the day before. Cities, especially when they take a step further, are quickly caught up in a variety of unexpected changes. On such a daily basis, my care will be left behind, but I feel that if I can fully charge energy, I can always maintain my self-control. I think that the accumulation of a moment for a moment makes Mainichi. The Shibuya PARCO store, which just opened in mid-September, also aimed to create an immersive space like a relaxing meditation for everyone.

—— You seem to have designed and designed the store by yourself.

Yes. I made it into a mysterious space with the image of an ancient temple. In addition to the futuristic vision, we created a world where dystopian science fiction landscape reminiscent of the movie "Blade Runner" intersects with timeless architectural quotes. The shelves are made of wood so that you can feel the tranquility and nature even in a futuristic manner. As a symbol of the shop, five pillars reminiscent of the columns of the ancient Greek temple stand up. Both sides of this pillar, inspired by Cariatide, have mannequins, and their poses also represent the world view of the store. The pillars of the jewelry display located in the center reflect light like the water surface, and you will be able to enjoy the immersion experience. In the fitting room, when you turn a curtain that sewns the scarves found in used clothes, you will be covered by the brand's symbol "All Over Moon". It was not just a boutique, but we aimed to create a space where you can touch, watch, and communicate with the essence of the brand from details such as space, texture, design, etc.

—— What is your impression of Tokyo?

Japanese people are calm and kind, right? Thanks to each other's care, the city is clean, and you can see the potential spirituality of nature. I think it's very nice to see what you see in your daily life. At work, I rarely meet women, but it is impressive that everyone has a hard side.

—— Is there any chance to experience nature outside of Tokyo during this visit?

Unfortunately, this is my third visit to Japan, but I always come to Tokyo for work and return without traveling to other places. Recently, I have traveled to Thailand, India, and South Korea, so I would like to visit not only nature but also various countries. I would like to take a leisurely vacation someday and come to Japan.
